Hilda Murrell, a well-known local rose-grower, naturalist, peace-campaigner and diarist, met an untimely death in 1984 when she was murdered. Her nature diaries were edited by the late Charles Sinker, one-time director of the Field Studies Council then living in Fitz in Shropshire.

Hilda’s only diary entry directly relevant to this work is the mention on pages 64 and 65 of a Woodlark on Stapely Hill on 7 August 1961. It was reported on page 13 of the SOS Annual Bird Report of that year and is indexed as such.
